Ring job

I have a b2200 that sat for 1 year and a half and the engine over heated and I replaced head and head gasket. The engine smokes in the morning and goes away, but still burns oil. It goes thru alot of oil. I am thinking of just replacing the rings, even know the compression is good. The truck runs great except for oil use and runs rich.
Has anyone here ever replaced the rings? and if so what am I looking at?

It can be done without pulling the engine pretty easily. You won't truly know if you need pistons or the cylinders bored until you pop the pistons out and inspect everything though.

What has to be done? Can it be done thru the oil pan, or do you have to remove the head to do this job. A engine shop told me the engine had to be pulled and you could not remove the oil pan without pulling engine. He also said you can not remove pistons without removing oil pan and that is why you have to remove engine. I figured he might be telling me that so I would just pay him to do it. His price to rebuild just bottom half of engine was $2,200 I really don't have that kind of money and everything on engine is in great shape and don't see the need to replace anything but the rings. So any more info about what I would have to do for this job would be appreciated?
thanks

You can remove the oil pan without removing the engine,it takes me about 30 minutes to do. You can't remove the pistons without removing the cyl head though as they come out the top.
