Default Need advice on replacing heater core...94 b3000

My buddy said his heater core is now leaking. A shop wants $1000 + just to replace a $30 part.... Are there any instructions out there on how to replace it? Or, if you have done it yourself, give me a little advice if it is worth tackling myself.

Thanks

J

Default RE: Need advice on replacing heater core...94 b3000

Reason is so expensive is that entire dash needs to be removed in order to access. Have not replaced one that I can remember but workshop manual indicates dashboard removal is required to access the heater core. Strange though that Mitchell recommended repair time is around 7.5 hrs to replace core and your shop is charging $1000+?? That is around $130 per hour shop is charging!! Where in the world do you live that charges that kind of labor rate?? My dealer charges $70 per hour. Yes you may be able to do the job yourself but there a LOT of parts to remove in order to just be able to see the leaking core. Unless you have a good tool supply and alot of patience and time you may be better off to have someone install it for you.
