Fuel Gauge Problems

Anyone know how to fix my fuel gauge on my 1990 b2200???? It always says it's empty except the other day i put in 50 bucks, and it said empty then a few minutes later almost a quarter tank, then back to empty. I know the tank doesn't leak, so i'm thinking maybe the sender????

The senders on these go bad frequently. http://www.autozone.com/N,14900685//shopping/partTypeResultSet.htm or rockauto.com
About $50 for the sending units (for vehicles with mechanical fuel pumps)

oddly enough it looks like the gauge works now, is it possible that the float was just stuck from sitting for a while (about a month are so) and driving it has loosened it???

Mine works sometimes, most times not. I'm using the trip odometer, plan to replace the sender soon.
