catalytic converters
I have a 1989 B2200 that smokes, thats not the problem, i'll re-ring the engine, it's the catalytic converters. the guy at the smog shop hear in california said that the catalytic converter was soaked with oil and would need replaceing along with rings and valve stem seals. my question is, do i need to replace both converters or can i just replace the rear one and still pass the california smog ? (after the ring job) any advice would be appreciated.

RE: catalytic converters
the first one right under the exaust man is way expensive ide just gut it out and go with an aftermarket high flow cat to replace the one under the drivers seat...although ive got both of mine gutted out

RE: catalytic converters
does anyone know if i need the front catalytic converter to pass the smog test in california ?? they have it in the kragen web site, but it says (except california) ????

RE: catalytic converters
you dont need two cants to pass the point isnt how many cats you have but how mcuh you need to acomplish desired emision, so if you can do away with the first then do it and run the second only...if it passes i asume with a properly running carb (if you have a carb) and a single cat you would do fine....i did for a long time, if you are that worried buy a replacement front cat, they arent too bad to change but be ware of the gaskets they are hell to find

RE: catalytic converters
ok. when i got this truck, 1989 mazda B2200 carberater with 177000 miles on it, it smoked like a stove, so i took the engine out and apart there was too much taper in the cylinder walls to just ring it, so i bought a engine kit had it bored with new pistons and rings,a turned crankshaft, oil pump, all the gaskets, put it together and she runs like a new engine. i put the front cat back on, theres no exhaust leaks, the rear cat is on there allso. i was wandering if the new engine will burn the oil out of the cats and pass the smog. or am i going to have to gut the front one and replace the rear one ? or both ? by the way, it cost me $850.00 for parts and haveing the block tanked and bored and the pistons pressed on to the rods.
