Camshaft position sensor replacement

Looking for a little info on replacing the cam position sensor on my '96 B3000 (3.0 L) truck.

Is the sensor itself just the electrical part at the top of the assembly? If so, what is the correct name for the entire assembly?

I've been told that a half moon shaped part at the top of the assembly (provides the signal for the sensor) commonly breaks off destroying the sensor. Supposedly, there is a special tool required to time the new assembly. Anyone have any info on where to obtain such a tool?

Any tips/tricks on repairing or replacing the sensor/assembly would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

RE: Camshaft position sensor replacement

Has been a few years since replaced one but will post with a little info. The top portion is the actual signal generator called the stator. Lower piece a believe is only the drive gear part called the cam sensor transducer. The couple that I did were one piece but this one shows upper and lower parts to be available separately. Lower transducer part # is ZZMO-20-351 and is $132.55. Upper stator is a ZZMO-20-370 and retails for $56.45. These are for OE Mazda parts. The special tool for aligning is a 49UN-01-1480. Should be available from dealer but their cost is $64.39 and an sure they will mark it up a bit. Am sending along of couple of pics from workshop manual on replacement. Special tool picture to. Am wondering if the lower part is undamaged you might not need to realign anything but just replace top. Don't know for sure though. Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info. I had a hard time locating an aftermarket sensor (upper part) but I got one today. Should have it installed this weekend. I just hope the rest of the assembly is good.

Again, Thanks,
