cam timeing

Hey guys, New to the forum here and gotta few questions. I just bought a 1987 mazda 2200 to drive to work and back. My brother-in-law has one and we were talking about some performance mods to kick it up a notch. I'm already in the process of getting a weber and a header and I've already got some mechanical rockers to put on. I was talking to a mechanic and he was telling me that you can move the cam gear on the cam to get some gains. He says there are differant setting like a,b,c,d, or 1,2,3,4. I was wondering if any of you guys new about this and if so which way do you move it to get what? Also if anyone has a weber they want to sell I'm in the market. The best deal I've found on a header is the pacesetter for $133 shipped. also what kinda gains can be expected from a cam and which is the best one?

sorry for so many questions.

thanks for any replys.

Charlie
