B2600i starting problem

I have a 1992 B2600i. For about the last 2 years I have thought the safety switch activated by the clutch pedal was going bad. It would start only when pumping the clutch or sometimes I would have to crawl down there and manually push in the button. It became worse, so I took the switch off and found it looked fine. Still, it would only start while messing with that switch. So, I "straight-wired" the switch to isolate the problem, and still it only starts very sporadically. I thought there must be something loose in the jumble of wires and boxes behind the switch, but I cannot replicate the sporadic starting by shaking any of that. It seems as if something electronic has been gradually failing and that the "fiddling" with the switch causing it to start has been a coincidence all along. But what could it be that is failing? Would it be a relay, and if so, where should I look for that. Any help would be appreciated.
