B2200 check engine light

Hello... My '88 B2200 pick up check engine light stays on a few minutes after start up and comes on when coasting down hill ( no throttle but still in gear).
Also where is the socket to plug in the code analyzer? Thanks for your replies..

hixx 01-29-2015 12:50 PM

There is a single green 1 pin connector near the wiper motor. Jump it to ground and count the check engine light flash's 1 long flash = 10. 1 short flash = 1

Flashes

Thanks.. I have found the little single socket. It is white.
There is a 3 pin connector nearby that has been disconnected.
Where would I find what the # means?

hixx 01-29-2015 01:40 PM

I can tell you. What's the code? There are only 16 codes.

Mr_Leffe 01-29-2015 02:00 PM

How will i recognize a specific #? Like 14.. How will I know a #4?

hixx 01-29-2015 02:07 PM

4 short flash's = 4
4 long flash's = 40

Mr_Leffe 01-29-2015 03:12 PM

It's showing code # 16

EGR position sensor.

Mr_Leffe 01-29-2015 03:21 PM

How to fix??

hixx 01-29-2015 03:38 PM

If you have no vacuum leaks,it is plugged up and no wiring problems or driveability problems i would replace the EGR position sensor and clean the EGR valve.

Mazda tells me I have to buy the whole Valve ($304) part #20-300

hixx 01-29-2015 06:18 PM

Sounds about right. They used to sell it seperately but that was a long time ago and they were covering half of them under warranty. Try taking it apart and cleaning it. If that does not work then you will either have to replace it or put up with the light.

Mr_Leffe 01-29-2015 06:27 PM

I wish it was that simple... To pass the SMOG test no engine lights can be on at idle. The EGR may be wore out anyway.. Diaphram?

hixx 01-29-2015 09:01 PM

It is more likely a bad sensor or sticking valve from carbon accumulation. 3 bolts and 5 minutes of cleaning should tell the story.

I've got two working used B2200 EGR valves available, WAY cheaper than that (in Arizona). The valve operation of each has been checked with a hand vacuum pump; both open when vacuum is applied, and both close when vacuum is released.

The brown stuff on the one is Permatex, I can remove that with alcohol.

I removed the EGR and cleaned a coalmine of carbon out. Replaced the unit and the Check engine light now gone. I did find an uncapped vac hose on the right side of carb base. Engine appears to run the same plugged or not. The left side one disappears in a harness of its brothers. Any knowledge where the loose boy is supposed to attach to?

hixx 02-02-2015 02:38 PM

Not without a picture. Those have a ton of vacuum lines.

The one with the Golf Tee. Does it connect to somewhere under the Air Cleaner?
