92 b2600 Remote Freewheel issue

So I have a 1992 b2600 with the Remote Free Wheel Lock (RFW) option.

Lately when I drive down the road, this whinning or winding sound starts, sounds like it's coming from the wheels. The 4x4 light comes on as well as the RFW light. When I come to a complete stop, the four wheel drive engages, I can hear it. I have to shift it from 2x4 to 4x4 back to 2x4 and that usually fixes it untill it'll will do it again say when I come to a stop or slow down.

Does any one know of this problem or have any advice as to solving it? I inspected the vacuum lines with soapy water, didn't turn up anything. The switch on the dash appears to be working. Can the electrical connector that mounts on the front differential cause this?

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

I have the same problem with my 93 Mazda 2600i pickup. Did you ever get the issue resolved. In 2wd, my rfw light comes on, then I start hearing that awful noise, the 4wd light flickers and then the car will be forced to stall out. It seems to be worse in wet weather, which makes me think it is something electrical. I took it to the shop and they put it on their engine analyzer and drove it around and as is always the case, the problem didn't happen when at the shop.

What I do now is drive around in 4wd.

Would love to find an answer.

Best,

Peter

Yes I did resolve the problem...It's called buy a toyota!

So I spent some more time addressing it, and I did infact have a series of vacuum leaks, I think at least 3 maybe more I don't remember. It immediately fixed the problem and then... Driving on the freeway it started again.. I found no new leaks??? I ended up selling the truck. So no official answer other than I don't think it's directly caused by vacuum. So I might agree that the switch or possibly the wiring to the acuater shorts.. And this could be induced by wet conditions.

Sorry I don't have a better answer Good luck and look forward to hearing about your purchase of a toyota ha
