89 b2200 problem

I just got a 89 b2200 given to me, and there is a few problems that i need help diagnosing

first off,

it takes a long time to warm up, and doesnt like to idle. At red lights it idles rough and sounds like it is going to stall even once it is warm.

also, if i let the gas get below 1/4 of a tank, it starts to lurch at speeds above 80 km/h

I thought maybe it was a dirty fuel filter, but i put a new one on and it still does it.

any ideas?

You could have dirt or worse in gas tank, maybe your fuel pump is weak. If it is starving for fuel because there is something semi clogging the fuel line at the gas tank, it won't idle to well. Have you checked the timing, if it is idling low maybe it needs to be advanced.

Hello,

Fuel delivery problems show most at full load, not at idle. You should perform a compression test to eliminate any mechanical problems with the engine. Also, check for unmetered air leaks. I like to use starting fluid or propane. With the engine idling, spray around the intake plenum and hoses. Be careful and stand clear, the fumes can ignite if your spark plug wires are arcing. If the idle changes with the application of the fluid, then you know that there is a leak.

If it's slow to warm up, I'd change the thermostat, inexpensive, and make sure all the air is purged out of the cooling system, might take a few running cycles to get it all out. These should warm up in less than 10 minutes.

As to stalling/idle issues: make sure all your vacuum hoses are on, and not loose or cracked. And that the EGR valve is not stuck open internally a little.
