Default 87 Mazda B2000 losing power on top end

I am new to the forum and have done some research already on my issue. I have had the truck for 2 months or so and it ran fine. About two weeks ago it started sputtering when at wide open throttle on the highway. When I took my foot off the gas slightly it smoothed out. I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs, wires and rotor in the distributor. I have checked most of the vacuum lines. What else do I need to check or replace? I read a post about the cat being clogged but I have not checked that. Any help is appreciated!

If an automatic with an electric fuel pump, check the fuel pump pressure and fuel delivery volume. Might not be a bad idea even with a mechanical fuel pump truck.

It's a 5 speed. How do I check the fuel pressure and volume or should I just change the fuel pump? They are only $20.

One tees in a fuel pressure gauge.

Direct the fuel delivery hose into a jar, and have a helper crank the engine. Determine volume per time.

Caution: gasoline is flammable !!! Note that a clogged fuel sock in the tank can cause decrease in fuel delivery.

And there's a good type of fuel pump, and a bad type. Both use the plastic spacer. Watch

Another question Cusser. I disconnected all three hoses going from the exhaust manifold to the air cleaner assembly. Truck ran better than ever. Miss and no power issue went away. Is the cat clogged? There is a lot of black exhaust soot on the silver part (Assuming emissions stuff) of the air cleaner assembly and the exhaust coming out of those 3 hoses actually melted the paint off of the air cleaner lid.

Also, How much of a performance improvement does the weber carb and header make? Is it a slight increase or is it like night and day? I know it's a 4 banger truck motor so it will never be fast but just with those 3 hoses off I noticed a huge improvement in acceleration and even improvment on top end.

I'm not sure I know enough about catalytic converters to know the answer to this, someone else will. I do know that both converters on my own B2200 have been hollowed out.

I went Weber 32/36 Weber on my B2200 truck in 2005 when I was having issues with my factory carburetor, and that nightmare was going to be more expensive than going Weber. Weber has proved to be reliable and workable for me, maybe a little increase in power. I have factory exhaust except hollowed out cats.

Thanks for the help. I gutted the second cat an the issue has gone away. Should I gut the first cat (right after the exhaust manifold)? This is obviously more work. Will it throw a check engine with both cats gutted?

If your power is restored, I wouldn't worry with gutting the other cat yet.......and No, gutting the converters will not throw a check engine light on the B2000 Mazda truck.

I agree: don't do anything now to the front converter since it's running good.

No, I didn't get any check engine lights on my '88 B2200 after mine were gutted.
