It takes more time than assembly a short block to properly set up valve springs. So close enough works with stock parts . But even considering an upgraded camshaft or messing with cam timing then that’s another ball game. K.I.S.S. works for a quick inexpensive rebuild !

it’s still a good find. BTW technically speaking you are not required to have any emissions on that Mazda of the part is NLA and can get an exception status. There is just a document you must file with the State to get it.

 

Thats interesting I didn’t know that about the emissions exemption. I might look into doing that for some other things. I noticed the manifold that routes the exhaust gasses back into the egr system has two of the ports broken off that were to be bolted into the exhaust manifold itself. I actually did find one on eBay but really don’t have interest in buying it for the price they’re asking for. It definitely was being ran with it that way since the open ports were plugged with a couple of bolts so I was going to leave as is or repair the manifold somehow if I felt I’d run into smog passing issues with it.

Edit: It clicked what I am describing is not EGR related and is actually the “air injection tube” for the air injection system…Ah old *** smog stuff. Such fun.
