Default 1992 B2200 looses engine power

I have a 1992 B2200 regular cab with 167, 000 miles. Recently while driving it will loose engine power, sputter, and almost stop running or it clears up on its own and runs fine. Around 130,000 miles the crankshaft key hole(?) had to be replaced. The mechanic can't duplicate the problem and I don't have alot of money to burn for him to try and figure it out! ANY help would be GREAT. Thanks.

Default RE: 1992 B2200 looses engine power

This problem can be caused for several reasons. The engine could be overheating, there could be crud in the fuel, clogged fuel and/or air filter, Ignition problems, engine overheating, and a few odd others.

I would probably start by giving it a full tune up. Replace the fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, and rotor button. I would also run some STP Carb/Injector cleaner for a couple of tanks of gas. If it is carbureted it has a feedback carburetor that has a lot of moving parts and is prone to cause problems. This should eliminate most of the common causes of your problem and if you still have the problem we can rule these out and start doing some real diagnosing.

mine did that once with a loose wire under the carburetor and the second time it was because there was an extra fuel filter put under the hood between the tank and the carburetor and when the gas pedal was pressed the force of the suction would cause the inside of the filter to collapse; cutting off the fuel ! Good luck
