what is this thing?

Hello, new to the forums, just bought a used Mazda and have a question.

What is the black box I can see in the trunk that i have in the pics. It is right next to the left rear 6x9 speaker. I see wires going to it, but nothing that i can figure out. Is it related to the stereo? Amplifier or something?

Guess theres not much activity here on the site for these old cars...will have to continue looking for info on this thing
