too high-accelaration
Hi Folks,
My 1989 323 1.6L sohc 5spd. Has a very high accelaration especially when cold. I have checked the: maf, the tps and throttle body adjustment screw, but nothing helped. Anyone has any idea what could be causing this delema. I even looked for vacuum leaks with no results. Any help will be appreciated. The car sounds like a F-16 on the tarmack. Thanks... |
Acceleration as in driving it gets up to speed really fast or do you mean it has a very high idle?
|
Sorry, I meant it has a fast idle...

does the idle slowly get normal as the car warms up or does it matter if it is warmed up or not
|
Ok. At first the Idle came down as it warmed up, but now it stays up no matter how warm it gets. I've just ran out of options, or where to look.
any help will be appreciated...' Thank you. |
There is an engine coolant temperature sensor. Worth checking...If the ECU doesn't know the temp it can't adjust.

Yes, reset the ECU as you described. Stepping on the brake will turn on the the brake light circuit and drain all voltage that may still be present in capacitors and such. You don't need to pump the brake, just step on it for a few seconds.
It erases the codes in the memory and the ECU starts over on a clean slate. It will have to relearn and self check things. To facilitate that drive normally, include a few highway miles, let it coast to slow down a few times. After a few days it should be up to snug unless something else is not o.k. If the CEL light comes on please get the code right away. The best of luck!

Ok, I replaced the engine temp sensor and now what iam getting is the car starts ok, but as it passes the cold mark on gage it goes into an epileptic mode and shuts down. It wasn't doing that prior to the exchange of the ets. Do I need to reset the ECU, I don't know how to do that. I heard you disconnect the ground battery cable, pump the brakes about 10 - 15 times then connect the batt. cable and go for a ride. Do this makes sense to you guys.
