I have a 98 mazda 626 and i have to do the timing belt but it is not working for me i was told that there is a trick to it i was wondering if anyone knows. Something like leaving the back loose and he front on and putting it 3 notches back so when you tighten it its on time if anyone knows please help.

You shouldn't be doing this without either a) a shop manual, b) a Chilton's or c) a Haynes
manual (in that order of preference).
Unlike some engines, you won't do any damage, but the probability of your doing it properly without an actual step by step written procedure in front of you is nearly zero.
If you are still determined to proceed anyway, go to the search tool on this forum and enter timing belt as keyword.
