Do you have the 4 cylinder engine or the V6?

To adjust the belt for the alternator refer to the first pic below. Loosen the upper 12mm bolt labeled 'A' by 1 full turn or so. Then start turning the 12mm bolt labled 'C' clockwise untill the belt is tight. Tight is when you can grab the belt midway between two pulleys and can only twist less than 90 degrees.

For the belt that runs the P/S and A/C refer to the second pic below. Loosen bolts labeled 'A' and 'B' by approx 1 full turn. Both should be 14mm although sometimes 'B' is a 17mm. Once those two bolts are loosened then start turning bolt 'C' clockwise untill belt is tight.Make sure to retighten all bolts that you previously loosened.

Is that enough info for you to get them adjusted???

another question..... what if it got sumthin to do with the cold weather... cuz thats when it started doin it.... what would i need to do...

RE: tighten belt on 98 mazda 626

cold weather usually creates two different conditions that make a loose belt noisy. The cold temperatures make the rubber belt more ridgid. Once the engine is started up then it becomes less rigid and tends to stop making noise. The other condition is usually higher humidity, especially in the mornings. Moisture on the belt can create noise also untill it is flung off or dried.

If the belts are older than 3 or 4 years and/or they are cracking then replacement would be a very good idea. new belts depend on where you get them. Dealer would probably $25 or so for each belt. First link below is to Schucks Auto Supply for quality Goodyear belts for your car. Upper link is for the alternator belt and lower link is for the Power steering and A/C belt. You do have Air Conditioningf???

Forgot to note that labor to have it replaced by a shopshould only be approx 1/2 hour. So if the shop charges $80 per hour would cost $40 plus the price of the belts. You are often times better off to buy them yourself and take in to have replaced if that is what you decide to do as the shop will often times mark up the cost of the belts a bit.
