Problem with Mazda 323

Hi guys,

I recently got a Mazda 323 1990 4wd. I have a few problems i'd like to try and sort out.

First of all, in the cold or when you first start it, it runs like crap. I have to pump it full of gas for it to run. Until it gets warm it just really does not like to go. I was wondering if I can play with anything to get the revs up or whatever when first starting the car until it's warm. When I try to reverse or anything it will die until it is warm.

Other small problem is the brake light is constantly on. I was wondering how to fix this? Maybe some switch is broken?

Thanks guys :)

RE: Problem with Mazda 323

Hi infused.

Runs crappy like idle speed is very low and wants to die? Runs ok off idle though? If so then you are most probably looking at a problem with the Air Valve on the underside of the upper intake plenum. This valve is open and allows air to bypass the throttle plate when coolant is cold and then closes off as the coolant warms up. As it closes the Idle Speed Control Valve on the under side of the throttle body take over idle speed control. This valve is electricaly controlled by the PCM to maintain even idle speed under various loads. The other Air Valve is completely dependent on coolant temp to open and close. If it is stuck closed then you would be getting the problem you are describing. Might be able to remove and clean. Would be worth a try anyway. Pic at bottom shows location.

Which brake light is on all the time? The ones at the back of the car or on the dash??
