Default 1996 Mazda 626 time for an upgrade

Hi all I'm new to this forum, and Mazda's in general. My son bought a 96 Mazda 626 2.0 and has been driving it for about a year now. It has 172k and now has a wicked valve problem. We were looking to do a Civic build, but since he's having engine issues I've talked him into building his 626 instead. I've read a few articles that his car can come stock with a turbo. But we do not want to go with a stock turbo setup. Any advice on a decent turbo system? We are looking to spend around 5k or so on it. His car is a 5 speed, so I know I'm going to have to upgrade the clutch setup, fuel system, ignition system. It's been along time since I've built a car, about 15 years, and a little rusty on everything I'm going to need. Any help or insight I will greatly appreciate.

i have been looking into doing a swap on my 323 so far what I've found is the b6t out of the Miata from the 90s will bolt up to just about any b series tranny I've also looked into dropping a 2.3l turbo out of the mazdaspeed 3 or idk if yours as the AWD compasity as the 323 might be something to look into opens up a ton of other ideas like a WRX STI build an what not
