Default New tires for 1997 626LX

Car has 33k miles on it, tires have 14k but are over 10 years old. Time for new tires. Costco has a sale on Bridgestone tires starting in a few days, but I'm told that Bridgestone doesn't (?) make a tire appropriate for the car. Not by Costco, haven't talked to them yet, but in a forum elsewhere.

My digital notes indicate that the tire appropriate is P195/65/R14. What I have on the car now is this:

Bought 2007 at Costco:

BF Goodrich
Pro Series
Trouring T/A
Treadware 500
Traction A
Temperature A
P195/65R14
Max load 560 Kg (1235 lb.)
Max Pressure 300 KPa (44 PSI)

I'm in Berkeley, CA. I have chains but have never driven the car in snow and maybe never will. It doesn't snow here. Maybe I'll drive in the snow with it some day, but have no plans to do that. I drive in the city, on freeways, may take some trips to explore national parks.

Can I get a reasonably appropriate set of tires for the car at Costco? In a Bridgestone? If not Bridgestone, what brand and specifications? If I need to shop elsewhere, please specify where and want I want. Thank you!

Smart move to buy tires after 10 years even with low miles.

You should be able to get good tires at Costco, however, I would recommend some research first. Go onto TireRack’s website, enter your vehicle and see what they recommend. If the Costco tires are a match, they will be on the TireRack site. They should also have reviews of a bunch of tires in all price ranges.

After a little research, you should have all the information you need to make the purchase.

Quite an odyssey finding the tires. Costco has nothing in a 14" tire. Tirerack.com not very helpful. America's Tire has or can get them and I ordered there. The one tire I found that looks good is the P195/65R14 nankang crossport sp9. I ordered a set and will have them installed in 7 days in Walnut Creek, CA, 15 miles from me. $52/tire, $319 out the door for the set. They provide free rotation, balancing, flat fix for the life of the tire. 3/32" tread of 10 years whichever comes first. Big O was a bust, Firestone didn't have them, Walmart also apparently doesn't have them. The Amazon reviews are very good.

The lack of results on TireRack tells me there are not many options available in that size. It does sound like you found a good option. You may want to check the date code of the tires when you get them to confirm that they are not too old.

People at Anandtech Forums GARAGE forum tell me that I'm better off with a non-spec alternative to the Chinese Nanking tires I ordered. So, I changed my order to a set of General Altamax R43 185/70/R14. It's costing me an extra $100, but the Generals are well regarded. Consumer Reports likes them. Installation set for Friday (in 3 days).
