New to group with a 1993 323

Question about the flashing hold light.
What does it mean? I have found in my searches that it has something to do with the tranny but what I am not sure. It has 111000 miles on her.
One other question (for now) there is a small leaver on the console to the upper right of the shifter, what does that do?
Thanks,

Oh and where can I find a spedo cable?

The flashing hold light is the equivalent warning system for you transmission as the check engine light is for the engine. The computer has detected some problem and is flashing the light to let you know.

To get the code you need to locate the diagnosis connector. Look for a little black or gray box with 'DIAGNOSIS' imprinted into the top of it. It should be located just to the rear of the left shock tower near the wiper motor Open up the top and you will see a connector looking thing inside like the diagram below. Same diagram is imprinted onto the underside of the cover you just flipped up. Use a paper clip and jump together the two pins marked "TEN" and "GND". Now get inside and turn the key on to the run position (all dash lights on but not running). The CEL should light up then go out and will then start flashing. You need to count the number of flashes in order to get the 2 digit code. For example: A code 46 would be 4 flashes, a short pause, and then 6 flashes, slightly longer pause and then repeat with 4 flashes, short pause, and then 6 flashes. Will keep repeating until you turn of the key or remove the jumper.

The little sliding lever is there to allow you to move the shifter out of park in case there is a malfunction in the shift lock system. Notice that you cannot shift out of park unless key is on and foot on brake pedal. By sliding that little lever to rear of vehcle it will manually move the solenoid lock and let you shift. It will probably be hard to move. They always are.

Did you speedo cables come apart between the upper and lower cable. If so you need to replace both as the connection point has been changed from plastic to metal. Both cables still available from Mazda. Upper is part #BTAR-60-070, MSRP is $41.70. Lower is BTAR-60-080 and is $30.35. Should be able to get for a bit cheaper at www.onlinemazdaparts.com
