Mazda 626--will not accelerate

Hey, I am the owner of a 1999 mazda 626, automatic. I drove it to the movies last night with no problems. After the show, I got back into the car, it started with no problems and drove well. However halfway into my trip, after stopping at a red light I noticed to car would not accelerate. The RPM was at higher than 3 and we could hear the engine, but the car barely began moving. After half a min or so it began moving again but would not accerelate no matter how much gas I gave it. It only began to pick up speed as we moved and whenever I had to stop, I had the same problem. I started the car again today and the same thing happened. Its fine to start, but when I had to stop it wouldn't accerlerate. Any suggestions on what could be causing this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

hey man I am new to the Mazda community but from what I can tell about your problem...it seem your transmission might be giving up....the 626 are notorious for having their automatic trannys giving up rather early in the car life....that is one of the reasons I have a 5-speed.

Sort of have to agree with bigboss. I'll ask the same questions I asked fct_silverinthis forum:

Is the fluid level proper? Does reverse work? Is the mileage high?

A yes to all three hints strongly at time for a rebuild or there may be debris getting caught ina valve.

Good luck to you.
