Mazda 626 Transmission
 

I have a 1999 626 4cyl, 20.L engine. It appears when the weather is cold, it does not want to move. I have to put a little pressure on the gas pedal for the car to move until it appears to warm and and the transmission goes into gear. As it warms up, it moves better, but it still slips.

I was told it needs a new transmission by Aamco. I am just trying to make sure it could not be something else. I've also been told that it could just be I need a new filter and fluid changes.

Any opinions would help.

Hi I'm sure there are people here with more knowledge then me but here goes. Pretty sure you have the Ford CD4E trans (wiki says it was used 1994–2002 Mazda 626 4-cylinder) like I have on my 97 2.0L 626. If true I'm afraid Aamco may well be right. 626net forums has a lot of threads on this trans and it a ringer. Filter is internal and you can't change the filter without splitting the housing apart ( that I saw in my Haynes manual) I slipping and I had my O/D light flashing (which I found meant my trans was over heating) It would go off after the car sat and cooled off - but soon come back after driving a while. Most of what I read on the net said the trans was not long for this world (they were right) Only hope that some gave was to drain (do not power flush this trans - the back flush will spew whatever is trapped in the filter back into the trans) - change the fluid and try Lucas anti-slip but the chances were not given as good. I did that and for 2 days it drove great and no flashing O/D light then the light came back and i barely made it home (stopping frequently to cool off) got it to a shop the next day (very near home) and the trans was shot. I had one from a salvage yard put in (I only have a parking space to work in and it's winter and cold in Colorado) and for just the extra price of the part, I had a aux trans cooler put in. The extra cooler is highly recommended all over the web as heat is the killer of the CD4E.
