Default intermittent fault

hi everypeeps, anyone a clue what may be happening? the car (s reg 626 2.0 litre)was trying to start but wouldnt make the transition from starter motor to ticking over. the key light is flashing intermittently and still wouldnt start when we tried different key.as aa man was towing me to garage petrol low light came on unexpectedly so asked aa man to put fuel in, which he did and car started but died quickly....a few more attempts and i was able to drive it around the block.came back to aa man who was about to drive away when it died again and now will only start every so often....have left it at garage but am wondering if it is an ignition issue(flashing light) or a fuel pump issue or a "spend a fortune at the garage for no satisfaction" type issue...any ideas??thanks
