how much do you think it would cost to replace 4 brake pads, just the pads, not rotor, and no grinding. just pads ............and to replace a fuel filter? i would say $225 max, right......................well i just got charged $458.17 how long should it take to replace pads and a filter?

They ream you on labor.

A set of pads runs anywhere from $20-$30 per set, 2 sets to complete a vehicle (assuming 4 wheel disc brakes)
New rotors aren't cheap, but you can have a rotor turned at most autoparts stores from ~$12 each.

I'd never just replace pads without at least turning the rotors. You'll get a very short life out of the brakes if all you do is slap in new pads.

Assume a labor rate around $85/hr (not unusual)
Parts total ~Pads ($30) + fuel filter ($20)=$50
Labor - probably charge 1.5-2 hrs labor.= $130-170
~$180-220 is a fair ballpark figure.

Both of those repairs are fairly simple. Did they have to do any diagnostic work to figure out a problem?

I could give some examples when I worked for a Chevy dearler, if it helps. We had a set price for brakes...$169.00 for cars and light trucks. And $49.99 for fuel filters.

If all work is spelled out on your receipt, and its charges, I would think you are stuck. Its usually referred to as buyers remorse. It is best to shop around at several shops before having repairs done. Thats the price we pay for living in a free market society!
