Help! single mum with broken down 323 1985 mazda hatchback

I have an old Mazda 323 1985 hatchback. Every time I put it into gear (any gear) it cuts out. The spark plugs have all been replaced and a friend of mine put a new coil in it. Still no go.
I would very much appreciate any advice you could give me on how to get it going again. I have two little children who need to get to school which will be very difficult without the car.
