Default Engine questions about 323 year '92

First of all I'm all new to the 'buying of cars' world and on a very limited budget at the moment cause I just got back home from abroad.
Fact is I absolutely need a car right now and someone pointed me in the direction of this 323 (sedan? - 4door) '92. He's rather knowledgeable and basically the car only needs 1 of it's lights fixed and couple of minor things, otherwise it appears to be in proper running condition. That said I haven't had a chance to look at the car myself, but with my limited experience I don't expect to add more to what he already said.

Anyways I was naively wondering how much modifications can be made to that car. To be clear I'm talking engine mods, mainly to make it be more fuel efficient and/or perform better.

What comes to my mind is can an injection type engine be fitted in? If yes which types would you guys recommend? And do any of you guys have any experience with that car, any suggestions or advice is very welcome.

Essentially I'm looking to make a wish/todo list for the future of that car, I already got a very nice job so it's all about waiting for the cash to flow back in the bank. Waiting for the cash to buy another car isn't an option though as I need it right now.

Thanks again and I hope I asked the questions in an acceptable way for this forum. If now my apologies.
