Catalytic Converter
I really need help regarding the catalytic converter on my 2001 Mazda 626 4 Cylinder w/ 120K. The check engine light came on recently and I was told by the mechanic that the catalytic converter needs to be replaced, which will cost $1500. He can't tell what specifically is wrong without taking it off, which would cost around $300 just to check it out. I know it's not safe to drive with it clogged, but what I'm wondering is this: (And I know nothing about cars so please forgive my ignorance)... Is there a way to tell if it's clogged, without taking it off? Or is there a way to know that the car is safe to drive temporarily. I need to drive about 1300 miles soon anyway, and if I can get where I'm going, a friend can replace the catalytic converter and save me about $1000, which is a big incentive, but I don't want drive that far if it's not safe just to save money. Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks. |
RE: Catalytic Converter
Try replacing the oxygen sensor 1st. A Bosch runs about $60. Genuine Mazda part is about $250.
