92 2.0 626 Mazda engine trouble

Hi!

Just registered to this forum and first post out.
Replaced water pump, timing belt and thermostat yesterday, when I cranked up the engine and had it idle for about 10 minutes noticed that the temp gauge was getting into read area but not boiling, turned off checked for proper coolant level which was ok but the hose going into the thermostat housing was hard as steel the thermostat wasn't open.
I've had mounted the thermostat wrong way [sm=oopssign.gif], maybe I was confused by a good friend of mine that was talking a lot all the time :D put the thermostat back and now right way, cranked up and everything seemed ok temp stayed normal, went for a test drive and noticed that the engine hesitates when accelerating not same good ol' engine as before.
Timing belt is installed properly new sparkplugs, one thing that worries me is that the battery was disconnected for more than 2 days, in the workshop manual they say that it will erase the keep alive memory information which may cause driveability concern.
Is there any other way to read the fault codes other than having mazda SSTs?
