626 Won't Start
 

Hello All,

I could really use help with my '93 Mazda 626 (2L). The other day I was driving, and noticed it was getting hot. As I continued to drive, I heard what I would call valve noise (just a chatter sound), so I pulled over (I probably drove 1/4 mile with it overheating and chattering, bonehead mistake, I know). Once I pulled over, I let it cooled down, but it won't start now (I had it towed home).

First thing I checked was the oil (no water in oil). I also looked at the radiator fluid, and no oil or gunk there either. I pulled all plugs, and replaced them (they didn't look too bad). I checked the compression (by pulling the plugs and using my hand to see if there was compression, scientific I know). I disconnected the fuel line at the regulator (just shy of the fuel rail), and there's plenty of fuel flow. There is also good spark. I pulled the valve cover off and it looks brand new beneath (no black gunk, looks very fresh).

Can anyone offer me some direction? I know my compression test was cheezy, but is that good enough (it seemed strong)? I have not checked timing, although I looked at the timing belt and it looks brand new too. I have a feeling the water pump went south, but I just want to get it started...

Sounds like you blew a head gasket and/or bent some valves. You cannot run these DOHC motors hot, or any car for that matter. Anyway, you need to get the compression checked, with the proper gauge, probably have the head checked and shaved, new valves, and a whole list of other things. Might want to check on a "new" used car. Good Luck!
