626 Rear Brake pads. Replacing them.

Hi all,

first post, good to be here.

I am not much of a mechanic but need to replace the rear brake pads on my 2000 626 GSI Auto. Is it a difficult job and will it be within my abilities to do it? I do have a basic tool kit and yesterday replaced the radiator on my BX with no problems.
Any advice from forum members would be very much appreciated.

Shouldn't be a problem. I've done that job myself. Just be aware of the hex screw on the back of the caliper that you have to run out to retract the caliper piston. It adjusts the e-brake tension. I wasn't and it makes it impossible to install new pads if you don't run it out. After pads are in and caliper is back on, turn the hex back in until it touches the rotor, then back it off 1/3 turn. You may have to adjust it to get the e-brake right. Good luck!!

Hi Josh,

many thanks for your advice. Its simple things like this from the forums that help make what i thought would be a simple job work and not turn out a nightmare.
I will let you know how things go when i attempt it, poissibly this w/end.

Best wishes and thanks,

Andy

Hi Josh,

done it and all ok. Bit awkward winding back the piston as i didnt have the correct tool for the job but managed it with some pliers to wind it in. Thereafter quite simple and it took about an hour. Brakes now sweet as a nut but will drive carefully for the next 500 m iles or so to bed them in.
Not bad for a novice.
