Default 626 problem

Ok this is how it goes. My friend has a 1997 mazda 626 and today the car was acting up by not being able to switch to secon gear while driving. well it goes to 4K rpm and it just stutters on it. he says that the trans. fluid is dirty but he's not even sure if thats the problem. any idea?

it sounds like an internal trans problem, or possibly a trans solenoid issue...
