626 Auto to Manual
We have a Mazda 626 that we race with but we want to swap out the automatic for a manual. We need any info as far as compatible cars for parts and/or information on parts cars with manual trans.
I believe the 626 & Ford Probe are mechanically similar. Any help would be great. The car is a 1999 626 ES with 2.0 liter I-4 Thanks |
First thing we're going to need is the model year of your 626 as well as which engine.

It may be easier if it were a normal car but since we have a roll cage and racing equipment installed it would be a big undertaking to get a new car.

Yup, I get that; the fact remains, beyond the work to replace the tranny and usually the half-shafts/axles, the chore of fitting the clutch pedal, clutch hydraulics, console modifications, the shift linkages, and the programming changes to the ECU (if necessary) can be quite onerous.
To be sure it can be done, especially if you have a donor car, but it is involved. |
A donor is what we are seeking. We understand the 626, MX-6 & Ford Probe share many components such as drive-train and was wondering if anyone can confirm or add to this info if possible.

I just did a little research and don't believe your 626 is compatible with either the MX-6 or the Probe, both of which ceased production in 1997 and were more or less compatible to the previous generation of the 626. That said, I've never really looked too closely at what changes were made between the last two generations of the 626.
