323, RPM Gauge

I am thinking about getting a Tachometer because my car for some reason doesn't have an RPM gauge so I figured that I would get on.

I found a pretty cheap one the Actron Sun Super Tach II Mini 8,000 RPM from autozone. Its only 34.99 and the only thing that I am waiting for is I am not to sure on how to put it on. I have a pretty good idea but I would like to know how to do it the right way.

I have a buddy that is a little bit better at putting on aftermarket products than I am but he is never around and I have the tools and I would like to know how to go about this.

I was just wondering if a gauge came with easy to follow instructions then I think I would be just fine. Just seeing if any one has done this befor, could give a younge guy like me some pointers.

I just would like to know what I am getting myself in to. I know I will have to do some cutting and fitting and what not.

Thanks

Tachs are pretty easy to put in. Just find a ign power wire first, then ground. Then you have to locate a wire thats hot with the lights on for night driving. For the tach signal, how I did it was on the coil itself, disconnect the two wire connector going to the coil, then turn the key on, engine off and use a test light to see which wire is 12v. Hook the wire from the tach (I believe its green) to the coil connector wire that DOES NOT light up the test light. Do not hook up the tach to the 12v side. The tach hooks to the negative side. You will probably have to drill a small hole to feed the wire through the firewall. And make sure to select 4cyl on the back of the tach.

Test light? Never used one. Do you mean a volt meter like a Fluke 88?

A Fluke 88 would work just perfect. A test light is just a simple way of checking for voltage but an 88 is even better.

LOL yeah I know, well the thing is I don't have one any more. I loaned it to a buddy and I moved away and never got it back.

Is there some kind of simple, cheap kind of voltmeter I could get that would work just fine?

I don't have an endless amout of money, considering I am going to college.

Just something I could use that would set me back too far.

I think I would be going after the buddy. My 88 set me back a little over $450. You can get an inexpensive test light from a parts store or maybe even wallmart for $10 or so. You can even get a DVOM from radio shack for fairly cheap ($20 or so ). The DVOM would be a little better investment if you plan on working on your own car. It does not have to have all of the bells and whistles as long as it is measures dc volts and ohms.
Almost forgot, the instructions for the Tach should be fairly self explanatory but if you need some help locating a good power wire or tach signal give a post. bkey71 has on older 323 and I have a 91 323 hatchback with the 1.6l auto trans. Am sure we can figure something out.

Cool thanks, its good to see some other people with 323s.

I will be getting a Tach hopfully soon. I just kind of want one yah know? I just want to know what my RPM's are just like every one else.

So yeah I will post if I need some help or if I get kind of lost.

How hard is it to hook up?

I mean do I need to do some cutting and fitting?

I have seen people do that befor, I am just wondering.
