323 Replace Gas Tank

My gas tank leaks when I fill it more than halfway full. I looked at it and the seam along the back side is rusted pretty badly. I took the car to my local shop and they told me this repair was not worth doing and it could easily escalate into replacing the fuel lines and brake lines (since they run next to the tank and are rusted). I already have the tank because I was planning on replacing it myself before I took the car in. Has anyone replaced the tank on their 323 hatch and is it really that bad of a job to do? The guy at the shops advice was to just get rid of the car, but I'm not planning on doing that. It has just over 108k and the engine runs great! Any advice on the subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

RE: 323 Replace Gas Tank

I don't know what year yours is, but i had an 87 and it was easy. The fuel lines were accessible under the back seat access cover, jack the car up on jackstands, then remove the fill tube jumper hoses, and the two support straps. It does not need many tools to do. If you plan to replace the tank, try to get the tank empty as possible to lighten the load!:D Just take your time and don't rush it.

Thanks, I still have not attempted it yet but I bought the book and have a friend who has replaced one before. I figure the shop just didn't want to do the job or something. I'll probably do it within the next month.
