Default 323 idle (97)

Ok so my 323 has idle issues! the enging was idling at 1500 sometimes and other times would be fine, often just offing the ignition and restarting would cure, or a good rag on the m4. I took it to mazda in newbury, the car refused to show fault and the ecu showed no error codes,
So I cleaned the throttle housing, idle and egr valves, reset the valve, plate and vacum adjusters, also the position sensor, I think i got that right! also a few minor vacum leaks on the manifold. now I was able to easier adjust the vacum setting now ( before had little affect) however now it appears the engine isnt choking, it idles fine when warm but drops and stalls when cold...so...can anyone tell me if the choke is operated by the air temp sensor in the MAF assembly or the water temp sensor, or has anyone else had either of the above problems and found another soloution?
