2001 Brake Drum Slipping
 

Hi I took apart my rear passenger side brake drum last night to replace the shoes, I put it back together according to the haynes manual, however, for some reason the leading shoe keeps slipping off of the brake piston which causes me to loose all pressure in my brake system and brake fluid to leak.

Does anyone have any idea why the brake shoe could be slipping, it is exactly the same size as the old shoe, I put it back together in exactly the same way as it was previously and also compared it to the assembly on the other side.

Leaking brake fluid means you'll have to replace the whole wheel cylinder. Sounds like a seal went. The return springs and other fasteners would keep the shoe in place. There's also some kind of notched or ratchet thing that you need to totally release before you put the shoe on and then the drum. A flathead screwdriver is usally all that's needed. Otherwise it's impossible to put the drum on. The first time you apply the parking brake or the pedal the thing adjusts and things snug up. I hate working on brakes.
