1998 Mazda 626 with harsh upshift

I began to have transmission problems with my 626 a little over one year ago. It has automatic transmission. I took it to a major nationwide transmission specialist. They are the ones that use "beep, beep" in their name. They rebuilt the transmission. Ever since then, when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, the car "jerks." It is very easy to feel, especially in bumper to bumper traffic when you are accelerating and decelerating frequently. The transmission shop was "grasping at straws" and could not find the cause of this problem. Each time I took it back to them, the only thing they could suggest is to replace the engine mounts. They claimed that the engine mounts were in bad shape. After the 5th visit to the transmission shop, I finally let them replace the engine mounts. After paying for parts and labor, it cost me a little over $1000. The replacement of the engine mounts did not solve the problem. The owner of the franchise has told me in writing that they will correct this problem, but I've had my car in their shop 5 times. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any suggestions?

unless it's a rediculous hard shift, you're in the clear. check on the tranny mounts. i assume you've only had the engine mounts taken care of. as long as the shift isn't mushy, then you're good. when the shift is hard(er), that means that the transmission is hitting the gear right, and the gears aren't worn out.

Hello woo7,

I failed to mention that the transmission mounts were replaced as well. The harsh upshift is really noticeable. In every other vehicle I've ever owned, the upshift was barely noticeable, if noticeable at all. That is not the case with my 626. We can feel a sharp "jerk" when the car shifts from 1st to 2nd gear. It is much less noticeable when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear. If you have any other thoughts or suggestions, please reply.

Thanks

I just bought a 98 mazda 626 a couple weeks ago and I have noticed the same problem. My dad use to be a mechanic and he don't even know what it could be. Could just be the way the engine is built.
My mazda has 120,000 miles.

i have a 98 626 and had my transmission rebuilt. my car didn't start the jerking shift thing until after i had it rebuilt. i have no idea what it is and haven't bothered to get it checked out. it happens alot when i'm at a stop and try to take off too fast. the car will tend to jerk but then it catches up.

what i've learned by being a 626 owner is that the only way to get these strange things fixed, is to get rid of the car.
