1991 Mazda 626: Starter Motor Fails When Engine Hot
 

I have a consistent problem with a 1991 Mazda 626 Automatic, Fuel Injected, Turbo.

The car starts like a charm and runs well on a cold start.

If the car has been run for more than about 5-10 minutes, and the engine is stopped, the car will not start again. I have to wait several hours (usually) until I can successfully start the car again.

When turning the key, I hear the main relay click, but nothing else happens. There is absolutley no response from the starter motor.

The starter motor / solenoid have been replaced twice. However, the problem persists.

It is a pretty simple circuit. 12 volts runs from the ignition switch through the inhibitor switch ( range selector switch on the trans) and straight to the starter. A 12 volt test light,a phillips screwdriver,a friend and 10 minutes should find the problem. Typically a no starter engagement hot is the starter but i presume the starter has been thoroughly checked out. Make sure the main wire from the battery and ground to the block are secure and free of corrosion.
