1991 626 Won't turn over

Ive got a 1991 626 dx and it doesn't seem to want to turn over. I got a new battery for it and it does nothing. When you turn the key in the ignition all the interior lights light up but when you turn the key all you hear is a single clicking noise and the lights dim. It doesn't even attempt to crank over at all. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

It sounds like a possible bad connection somewhere. I would check to make sure the battery cables are clean and tight. If the battery has been corroded on the posts in the past, the cables themselves can be faulty and cannot handle the load. If the car has a standard trans, you can push start it to make sure it will run. Another possibility is a starter or switch.

The battery cables were pretty bad. Pretty much white. Do you clean them with a wire brush or replace them typically? From what I've heard the starter switch is a pain to replace because its behind the steering wheel and all that junk. Any pointers on replacing it? Its an automatic so I'm not able to pop start it.

Thanks a ton for your help. Right now im financially in no position to get another car.

If there was a lot of corrosion, it can get inside the cables causing excessive resistance. It does not matter if you clean the outside of the cables in this case. The best way to try and clean them is with some baking soda mixed with water. Make this mixture in a plastic cup and dip the cable ends in for a good soak (after removing from the battery). This will help clean and neutralize the acid. DO NOT try using a wire brush on the DRY corrosion, it will burn your nose and throat. I would try this before the switch.

It did turn out to be the alternator.

Any idea if two hours of labor at a shop is too much?
How difficult is the job?
Alternator buried in engine bay?

Thanks

Sounds like you need a replacement solenoid. It sits on top of the starter motor. It is normally the bushes that go first

First off I would like to welcome you to the site :) Second your questions would be MUCH better handled if you started a new thread and not dig up one that is over 6 years old ESPECIALLY one that has no relation to what your asking, so if you could recreate your post in a new thread so this really old one can go back to its grave :)
