1988 323 Rear Brake Confusion

Hi, I just acquired a beautiful 323 SE with only 65k miles. It is in immaculate condition... except the brakes feel a little soft to me. The front brakes are brand spanking new and was told the rear was as well. I can see the front brakes but can't see the rear without taking off the drums. I am thoroughly confused about how to do this and I can't find enough info on the forum's search.

I can't get the drums off to look at the internals. One wheel the studs move with the drum. This tells me the studs are PRESSED into the drum ?!? I saw a post which said the center nut holds on the drum but you need a one-time use nut to replace it with. Why is it a "one-time" use?!? I don't want to take the nut off and not be able to get it back on without some feedback from you guys.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial?

TIA,
Bill

Get the brake fluid flushed.

Also replace any rubber hoses with new. The car has to be 20+ years old by now. They are tired, worn and likely cracked and ready for an accident to happen... assuming of course they haven't already been replaced.
As for the drums; I'm not sure if the studs are pressed into the drum, or the drum rides on a central hub? My guess would be the latter. If concerned about the nuts, order from a local dealer, or from an online source. If they are a wear/throw-away part, they should be readily available.
