It sounds to me like you have an auto, is that right?
Did anyone check to see if the inner CV joints are toast?
And a 2006 w/12k miles should be under warranty (36/36 bumper-to-bumper w/60k power train warranty!!) Why not take it to a dealer?

Yeah the car is automatic.. but no we didnt check if inner cv joints are toast.... but the noise is coming from inside of the tranny, and thats the second one we tried already so it cant be the tranny now.
the car is 2006 but it has 85000 the tranny we bought it has 17000.
I dont trust the dealer already had a tranny changed and still crap.

I don't know much about Mazda's(my wife just won a CX-9,which is why I joined this forum)If there is a tin plate between the engine and transmission-it could be slightly bent and rubbing the flywheel. If the torque convertor was out of the transmission or had slid part way out and not reinstalled properly, could cause grinding internally(when the transmission was installed the torque convertor should be loose against the flywheel-able to move the torque convetor studs back and forth slightly in the flywheel holes before the nuts are installed).
