Mazda assistance after warranty?

My 2013 CX9 with roughly 117K miles died while we were on vacation 8 hours from home. It died the night before we needed to check out, so we had it towed to the closest place with Saturday hours. They said the timing chain broke and that took out the engine and needs a full replacement. We called insurance wondering if maybe the torrential downpour had something to do with it (driving on unfamiliar roads, maybe deeper water than we thought). They sent out 3 different people, including some kind of specialist tech who wrote a very thorough report. No signs of water anywhere- just mechanical failure. So not covered.
We are having a hard time deciding what to do about it. I can junk it for around $1600-$1700. It's worth around 9K if it were running. We can pay to tow it to Mazda and pay them to diagnose it, and cross our fingers that they'll pay for it, or half, or something... Or we can have it transported home for $500, and just let it sit for awhile while we figure it out. Insurance took 6 weeks to respond, so the auto shop is now antsy to have us get it off their lot, understandably.

We do not do oil changes with Mazda but can pull up receipts to show it was done. The report from insurance shows a slew of stuff they looked at, including that oil was clean and properly filled.

We're not really in a position to waste more money, and need whatever we can get out of it. We weren't in a position for my 9 year old car to die either. I bought CPO about 5 years ago, and the sales guy kept saying how it has a timing chain that never needs to be serviced and lasts well over 200K. Unfortunately I had to buy a car already as I couldn't wait months- and if we get it fixed to keep, there's a long wait list on engines.

Anyone have any insight?
