929 Fan Clutch
 

After about 25 minutes, my 929 starts to overheat. I replaced themostat, Rad Cap, Coolant with a radiator flush. Took to a Mazda cert mechanic. He said I had a bad Fan Clutch. Ordered over web and replaced. Still overheated. Returned FanClutch and replaced with one sent. Still overheating. My mechanic says that he should not be able to stop fan with his hand and he can. Mechanic at Mazda dealership says you can stop it. My mechanic believes that I need to by a new Fan Clutch from Mazda over a OEM rebuilt from the Web. Any help is appreciated.

the way you can tell if you need a bad clutch fan, is by turning the car off, and spinning it by hand. spin it hard, andf get your hand out, it should stop very qucikly.

If I spin the fan by hand it stops quickly.

Do you know if I should be able to stop the fan, with my hand, if the car is hot and running? I understand that it has a viscous drive process and there are not actually interal gears. This seems then that you should be able to stop it with you hand.

Proper procedure for cooling fan inspection as per work shop manual. 1. Check for the following and replace the fan assembly if necessaary. A. fluid leakage from the fan-drive clutch. B. deformation of bimetal ( front side). C excessive play of cooling fan bearing. D. grease leakage from cooling fan bearing. 2. when the engine is warm and stopped, turn the fan by hand and check that resistance is felt. Replace fan clutch if necessary.

FINGERS! ***
Inspect the fins of your condenser and radiator, are they flat, pack with bugs, leaves, gravel, etc need to be cleaned and straighten.
Next, you may have to pull the radiator and it rodded out, flushing doesn't always work, radiator shop time.

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on taking the Radiator off and take it in. I just replaced it, but the shop where I purchased it at, said they would blow it out. My mechanic did the fan stopping by hand thing. My problem is hearing that you can stop the fan and that you should not be able to stop the fan from different MAZDA people. Just need to eliminate factors so that I can find the real problem.[sm=headbang.gif]

Problem fixed. I took the radiator out and had it checked. I was told that it needed to be rodded out. When I picked it up it was in a new box, later that night when I put it in, I discovered that it was new. Apparently the original was defective.
