Default 2006 mx5 wheel fit

hello,i am a new member and this is my first post. my wife and i just purchased a new 2006 mx5 sport model. it has 17 inch wheels but did not come with a spare. i purchased a new 17 inch rim and tire for it. i got home with it and it will not fit in the trunk. i appear to be about an inch shy of fitting in there. my question is if i can find a five bolt 16 inch rim will it fit on the car. this will fit in the trunk but i want to make sure it will fit on the car with room for the brakes. any help would be great because we plan on taking trips in thecar but i do not feel comfortable doing it without a spare in the car. i hate to rely on the repair kit they sent with car. thanks

take a look at the clearance between the inside edge of the rim and the outermost part of the brake caliper (that should be where you would rub first.) I'm almost positive that you can run 16" wheels (stay with the same offset & width as your 17" wheels)
