Default 2002 Miata

Car runs well (auto transmission) but idles roughly when stopped at light. Could this be torque converter?

Well there are so many basic question where to start....
How about what part of the world do you live in and be specific not as an example Canada or UK or USA (what state or province)it matters?
Miles on odometer
When did the problem start month and miles
Does the issue change when in part
Did you verify that all the mounts are in tacked and not worn or broken?
And check engine light that appeared and then turned off or is on now?
Then what gas do you choose to use... station brand and octane?
When was the last service done and what was it? Miles and date?
When was the last time basic parts that keep the engine running well changed i.e. spark plugs?
When you scanned the 3 basic areas of the ECU and not using a blue tooth type scanner what did you find for DTC9S) both pending and permanent and I/M status?

Common...... a little info goes a long way to help you....

Torque converters give little trouble in a std car. Lots more info required.

Auto trans. Car idles fine in neutral but runs rough once transmission is engaged with brake on. Just bought the vehicle, my second one. 24 years old but only 50k miles. Will also replace struts and shocks all the way around.

Read the 2nd post (#2) again

Also there is no indication based on your limited information that it is transmission related.

Before wasting money on struts and shocks a little attention to some basic things with the engine is probably where you need to spend some money. How far has the car traveled in the last year? When was it last serviced? What was done then? How old is the fuel in the tank? Lots of things like this may be associated with your problem. At 24 years old there may be a few gremlins in the electrical system. Can you think what may be wrong if it hasn't been anywhere in the last 10 years?
