Default 2001 Mazda Protege Problems

I took my car in and had it scanned. The code was for a a MAP (manifold absolute pressure/aka engine vacuum) sensor fault.
Help
what does this mean?
Would this have anything to do with my gas mileage being so poor?

most sensors on/around the engine are part of your emissions, all affect the gas milage as well as performance
