RE: 2000 1.6 DOHC TIMING WRONG

depiction below is timing belt alignment marks. There is a letter raised letter "I" on the intake cam and letter "E" on exhaust cam. These letters should be at 12 o'clock position. When they are these is a faint line on both pulleys that should line up exactly (labeled timing mark in the drawing). The crank shaft pulley should have a little notch in it that will line up with a raised arrow mark on the front of the oil pump also at the 12 o'clock position.
If you did not remove the tensioner spring from the peg on the engine when rotating the tensioner pulley then it has probably been overextended. Refer to second drawing below and this measured length should be no greater than 2.43 inches or 62 milimeters. If it has been overexteded it is a very good idea to replace as belt will not have sufficient tension and will start snapping at start up leading to shortened belt life.

RE: 2000 1.6 DOHC TIMING WRONG

I on intake cam up E on exhaust cam up. crank up. there should be 2 lines on the cam pulleys facing eachother. loosen the tensioner bolt, push back the pulley and let the spring apply tension to the pulley. snug bolt up. rotate crank 1 and 5/6 turns. there is another markthere. loosen the tensioner bolt again and let the spring tighten the belt. tighten the tensioner bolt and turn the crank another sixth of a turn. make sure all your marks line up. there should be no more than 7mm deflection of the belt between the cams with moderate pressure
