Placed on the front wheel drive platform of the
Mazda 626, the Mazda Tribute is a small crossover SUV, which is similar to the Ford Escape SUV both of which debuted in 2001. The Mazda Tribute is also known as the Ford Maverick in Europe. In the United States the Mazda Tribute and Ford Escape are offered with front wheel drive or all wheel drive as well as the choice of a 2.0 L Mazda 4 cylinder engine or a Ford Duratec 3.0 L V6. In Europe the Ford Maverick is sold with a 2.0 Zetec engine or the 3.0 Duratec. Both the Tribute and the Escape are manufactured in the United States, specifically in the assembly plant in Claycomo, Missouri.
Don't be confused though, the Ford Escape and Mazda Tribute do have one very important difference. Unlike the Ford Escape, the Tribute is manufactured for a more solid ride than the Escape. The difference is an important one, one that separates Ford from Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" capabilities.
The Tribute was not the first Mazda SUV, as it was manufactured to replace the Navajo which had ceased production in 1994. The Navajo was more of a combination of a car and a SUV, and it offered many people the ability to find the exact fit for their lifestyle.
In 2005 the Escape and the Tribute were updated for a fresh look as well as an updated engine. Now, the Mazda 2.3 L or the 3.0 L Duratec V6 are offered. Mazda plans to release a hybrid version of the Tribute by 2007 and engine options will be about the same for that model.
Though the Tribute is a small SUV many consumers find it just the right size. Mazda has maintained a very close relationship with consumer needs, and they continue to feed the needs of the people that don't need the larger SUVs but need something bigger than a car. The Tribute can get the big jobs done as well as provide a comfortable means of transportation.
