Starting in early 2006, Mazda started selling the 2007 model of the CX-7 which is a mid sized crossover
sport utility vehicle. Mazda had previously introduced the MX-Crossport, which was a concept car on which the CX-7 is based. The CX-7 will be built in Japan and was shown for the first time in January of 2006 at the Los Angeles Auto Show in anticipation of sales starting in the early spring. The CX-7 replaces the
Mazda Tribute in the
Mazda lineup until Mazda introduces two new SUV's for the 2008 model year.
The CX-7 is notable because it uses an all-new platform instead of sharing one with Ford, Lincoln, or even other Mazda vehicles. The crossover SUV does use the front suspension of the Mazda MPV minivan and the rear suspension of the Mazda5. The CX-7 all wheel drive system shares many components with the Mazdaspeed 6, as well as the turbocharged engine that powers the vehicle.
Mazda has powered the CX-7 with a 2.3-liter straight four MZR engine and has been tuned to produce 244 horsepower at 5000 rotations per minute as well as a respectable amount of torque. The engine is paired with a six speed automatic transmission, the only type of transmission that is currently being offered for the CX-7.
Some of the exciting features of the CX-7 are an independent suspension, four wheel ventilated disc brakes with standard antilock brakes, stability control, and traction control. Consumers have the choice of all wheel drive or front wheel drive. The CX-7 is also reported to get over 23 miles per gallon in combined driving, which will make the CX-7 a shoe in for many SUV buyers that are looking for the space of an SUV but the fuel efficiency of a car.
